“Real English” vs. Japanese English

Today I had a lesson with anexcellent student. She has a good ear, good pronunciation, and good communication skills! She is fun to talk to. But like many Japanese, her weak point is she thinks in Japanese and translates into English….(もし日本語で考えてそのまま英語に訳そうとすると、Japanese English になってしまうんですよ).
English and Japanese are REALLY different languages and if you want to speak “Real English” (英語的な英語) you need to learn to think in English.
For expample:
Bob: What did you do on Christmas Day?
Student: Maybe I worked.
“Maybe I worked” is a direct translation of 「多分仕事した」, not real English, an not natural-sounding. Native speakers would probably say:
“I don`t remember. I think I worked.”
“”Maybe” is real English but it`s used differently than 「多分」. “Probably” の方が「多分」に近いと思いますよ。 多分ね (笑)Instead of saying, “Maybe 何何何・・・” native speakers like to use expressions like “I think….” and “I guess….” and “I bet…..” 自分のことについて答えたらだいたい “I think”を使います。 他のことについても”I think…”を使いますけど、多分そうだと思った場合は”I guess”を使います。合っている確率が高い場合は “I bet…”を言った方が良い。
For example Survival English 7 の写真について話しましょう. Let`s practice a conversation in native speaker English.
A: Is the girl pretty?
B: I don`t know because I can`t see her face. But I guess yes, she is pretty.
A: Where was this picture taken?
B: I bet it was taken in America.
A: How many carrots is the girl holding?
B: I can`t see clearly, but i think she has three.
You can say “Maybe, maybe, maybe” but if you`re goal is to communicate smoothly with native speakers in natural English, in “Real English,” then you should listen to, imitate, and then SPEAK! real native speaker English. もし英語を勉強している目標は英語のnative speakersとスムーズに自然な英語でコミュニケーションすることだったらいつもnativeの英語をよく聞いて、真似して、いっぱい身に付けた方が良いです! もしいつもnativeの英語を真似したらどんどん少しずつもっとnativeっぽく話せるようになれると思います。 Real Englishを沢山身に付けると日本語を考えないで英語的な英語でお喋り出来るようになれると思います。
So, please practice the above converation, too! And if you want more practice you can take
「Fun Topics – Culture 3, Holidays」 for a LOT of practice with “I think…”; “I guess…”; and “I bet….”
