There are many ways to say “yes” in both English in Japanese. Let`s practice some of the different ways to say ”yes” in English.
If you are a native speaker of English and someone asks you, “Can I sit here?” you probably won`t say, “yes.” You will probably say, “Sure!” or “Go ahead,” or you may use a combination like, “Sure, go ahead.”
Let`s look at more examples and more ways to say “yes.”
Can I…?
A) Can I eat here? B) Sure.
A) Can I turn on the TV? B) Sure, go ahead.
A) Can I open the window? B) Go ahead
A) Can I borrow your pen? B) Sure, here you go.
A) Can I smoke here? B) Sure, I don`t mind. [“Sure, I don`t mind” means 「
”Here you go” は何かを渡す時に使います。 Could you please leave a comment here?
Could you…?
A) Could you tell me you phone number? B) Sure. It`s 090-1234-5678.
A) Could you open the window? B) Sure, no problem.
A) Could you speak more slowly. B) Okay.
The difference between “Can I…?” and “Could you…?” is…
“Can I…” is asking permission.
and,
“Could you…” is asking a favor (お願い)。
