In Japanese you usually use the adjective 「痛い」 when talking about pain; in English we use the verb “hurt.”

For example:

My leg hurts.     (足が痛い)

My head/eye/ear/chest/arm/stomach/leg hurts.

でも、英語の場合は複数形もあるのでそれも練習しましょう・・・

My legs hurt.     (複数形の「legs」を使って、動詞に「s」を付けない

My eyes/shoulders/lips/ears/arms/legs/fingers/toes/ hurt.

質問にしたら・・・

Does your leg hurt?  (one leg)

Do your legs hurt? （both legs）

Let’s look at some English expressions of 「夜中」.

①夜中に目が覚めた。

②夜中の２時に目が覚めた。

まず、最初に。。。

「真ん中」を英語にしてみましょう。

↓

そう！”middle” ですね。

「夜中」はこの”middle”を使います。

↓

”in the middle”+”of the night”=in the middle of the night が正解です。

①はI woke up in the middle of the night.

となります。

では、②に行きましょう。

「夜中の２時」は日本では「夜」ととらえますね。

ところが欧米ではこれを「朝」ととらえます。

夜中の１２時を過ぎたら”a.m.”をつけるのと同じ感覚です。

したがって。。。

②はI woke up at 2 in the morning.

が正しいです。

ちなみに。。。

「真夜中（午前１２時）」を英語にすると。。。

”midnight”です。先ほど出てきた”middle”が”mid”と短縮されていますね。

「お休み」って実はいろいろな言い方があります。どんな「お休み」かにより使い分ける必要があります。

Let’s take a look!

今日は５つの「お休み」を見てみましょう。

↓

①明日は休みです。

②毎週水曜日が休みです。

③来週、休暇を取ります。

④明日は祝日です。

⑤あのお店、今日は休みね。

どうですか？英語にできましたか？

では一つ一つ見てみましょう。

先ず①と②”off”を使います。

↓

①I’m off tomorrow.

②I’m off on Wednesdays. (毎週なのでWednesdayは複数ですよ！)

では次。

③のように長めの休暇を取る場合、”vacation”を使います。

自分の予定を言いたいので、”I’m -ing”　を使うといいですね（＾－＾）

↓

I’m having a vacation next week.

「１週間、休暇を取ります」なら

↓

I’m having a 1-week vacation next week.

では④番です。

祝日・祭日は”holiday”を使うといいでしょう。

Tomorrow is a holiday.

よく”holiday”と”vacation”の違いは？と聞かれます。アメリカ英語ではvacationは

長めのお休みを指し、holidayは祝日・祭日。Holidaysにすると祝日・祭日が何日もある時。

クリスマス頃がまさにそうです！There’s Christmas, New year’s eve, New Year’s… ゴールデンウィークもholidays を使えますね。

では最後。

⑤あのお店、今日は休みね。

↓

お店がお休みの時、”closed”を使いましょう。

The shop is closed today.

「毎週月曜日が休み」なら、

The shop is closed on Mondays.(曜日なので”on”毎週なのでMondayは複数ですね)

では、おさらい。

お休みは”(be)off” ”a vacation” ”a holiday” ”(be) closed”があります。

予定なので”(be) gonna”を使いましょう。

では、この文に「英語のレッスンを受けるために」を加えましょう。

↓

I’m gonna go to Azabu to have an English lesson.

となります。

この”to”ですが、と～～～っても役立つので、ぜひぜひマスターしてほしいです。

では次の文。

ヒーターをつけました。

↓

I turned on the heater.

ですね。

ここに、「部屋を暖かくするために」を足しましょう。

↓

「暖かくする」は”warm”を動詞として使います。

↓

I turned on the heater to warm the room.

が正しいです♪

では最後の文：

彼女に電話をします。

↓

これから電話をかけるので”will”を忘れずに。

↓

I’ll call her.

では、「確認するために」を足しましょう。

↓

I’ll call her to check.

となります。

Hi everybody.  And happy holidays!!  Yes 複数形の “holidays” ですよ！　There are lots of them in this season.  The  ”Holiday Season” starts with Thanksgiving (the third Thursday in November) and then there`s Christmas, Hannukah, New Year`s, and others…???  If you like Christmas songs and christmas lights (イルミネーション) and winter it`s a fun time of year.  So here are some holiday expressions for you to practice with your English-speaking friends….

          “Deck the halls!”     「部屋をクリスマスっぽく飾りましょう」という意味なのかな・・・普通は “deck the halls” って言わないんですよ…holiday seasonの専門語!

         “Christmas cheer”     「お酒」     (動詞にするとやっぱり”haveを使います・・・”Let`s have some Christmas cheer” みたいな・・・)

         “caroling”     「みんなでクリスマスソング歌うこと」

         “mistletoe-ing”     キスすること！(mistletoe はクリスマスの飾りで、もし誰かとmistletoeの下に一緒にいたらちゅしなくちゃいけないんですよ　でも心配しないで！　ジニーをクリスマスっぽく飾ってるけどにmistletoeがないですよ・・・You are safe!! 笑）

         Silent Night, Holy Night     (静かな夜、聖なる夜　This is the first night of Jesus Christ`s life. 　もしかしたらラブラブナイトという意味だと思った？？　違います)

         Happy Hannukah    (ユダヤ人のクリスマスみたいなウィンター祭り）

        Frosty    (世界一有名な雪ダルマ）

        Rudolph     (世界一の有名なトナカイ）

         reindeer     (トナカイちゃん) 

         Ho ho ho!     (サンタのゲラゲラ仕方）

        Happy holidays!!     (一般的な holiday season の挨拶）
