I won`t be able to see you for a while.      (しばらく会えない)

「しばらく」というのは・・・

for a while ってことです。

Here are some more examples…

I haven`t seen Russel for a while.     (しばらくラッセルに会ってない。)

I haven`t had sushi for a while.     (しばらくお寿司を食べてない。)

“on” が入るんですよ！

I went on a date with 何々ちゃん last night.     (夕べ何々ちゃんとデートした。)

Do you and 何々ちゃん go on dates often?     (何々ちゃんとよくデートするの？)

Have you ever gone on a date with an American guy?     (アメリカ人とデートしたことある？)

色々な言い方があります。　Let`s look at a few examples…

① hang out

Let`s hang out.     (遊ぼう)

I hung out with some other Genie students in Roppongi last night.     (夕べ六本木で他のGENIEの生徒と遊んだ。)

時々 “hang out” は 「ごろごろ」「ダラダラ」「うろうろ」みたいな意味があるし。　For example…

Last Sunday I just hung out at home.     (先週の日曜日家で何もしなかった。)

Last Sunday I just hung out with my girlfriend at her apartment.     (先週の日曜日彼女のお家で2人でごろごろしてた。）

② go out

Let`s go out.     (遊びに行こう)

A)  Did you go out last night?

B)  No, I just hung out at home.     (← あれ？　英語で遊んだかって聞かれたら、ううん、ただお家で遊んでたって答えるのか？？　うん、そうだね、もしそのまま日本語に訳そうとしたら確かに混乱しちゃうんですよ。　でも “go out” と “just hang out at home” はニュアンスがかなり違うからネイティブの会話を沢山聞いたほうがいいんですよね？　もうちょっと正確にこの会話を日本語に通訳したらこんな感じになるんですけどね・・・「A) 夕べ遊びに行った？　B) ううん、家でごろごろしてただけ。」)

和英辞書に色んな役に立てない通訳が書いてあるんですよ。　誰が書いたか分からないけどあなたが Real English を話したいなら和英辞書を捨てた方がいいと思いますよ！　Anyway…here is one word that is strange:  丁度.  If you look up 丁度 in a Japanese-English dictionary the word “just” appears.  もしアメリカで「丁度です」か「丁度いただきます」って言いたい時に “just” って言ったら相手が “just what?!” って聞くでしょう・・・。　金額だと・・・

It`s the exact amount

と言います。

But sometimes “just” can collocate with other words to form useful expressions.  For example…

just the right size     (丁度いいサイズ)

just the right time     (丁度いいタイミング)
