Okay, here`s another blog.  Actually, here is part two of yesterday`s blog!

How do you say 「久しぶりに～した」 in English?

There are a few ways.   Here is one easy pattern you can use…

過去形の文章 + for the first time in a long time   

Here are some more examples:

I wrote an entry in my diary for the first time in a long time today.     (今日久しぶりに日記を書いた。)

I went to the gym for the first time in a long time yesterday.     (昨日久しぶりにスポーツクラブに行った。)

I had sushi for the first time in a long time last night.     (昨夜久しぶりにお寿司を食べた。)

You can also use a period of time instead of “in a long time.”     (“A long time” の替わりに期間の言い回しも使えます。）　For example…

Last year I met my family for the first time in 5 years.     (去年5年ぶりに家族に会った。)

Today I had some eager students and I think we really enjoyed English together!  And one student had some great questions:

① How do I say 「日記書いてる」 in English?  答えはちょっと複雑です・・・

“I write a diary” or “I keep a diary” or “I`m writing a diary” or “I`m keeping a diary” or “I`ve been keeping a diary” or “I`ve been keeping a diary” or…英語と日本語は全然違うから本当は色々な言い方があります！

英語の現在形は、正確に言うと☆いつも通り形☆ですから　”every day” か “once a week” みたいな副詞も使ったら…

“I write a diary every day” と言います。　だけど、目的語の “something” or “an entry” and “in my diary” も言った方がいいからこの表現にしましょう・・・

“I write something in my diary every day.”     (Use the present simple tense when you talk about いつも通り.)

英語の現在進行形は正確に言うと☆今形☆か☆一時的形☆ですから今手にペンを持っていて日記を書いている状態だったら…

“ I`m writing something in my diary”って言うんですね。     (Use the present continuous when you talk about what you are doing RIGHT NOW.)

Question②についてまだまだ全然話してないけど現在完了進行形の使い方も説明してみます・・・

現在完了進行形は分かりやすく言うと☆最近進行形☆って言いましょう。　ということで、この会話を見て下さい・・・

A) 最近Bちゃんいつもなんか書いてるんだね。小説家になりたいの？

B) ううん、日記書いてるの。

AちゃんとBちゃんは最近Bちゃんがいつもしていることについて話しているから日本語では存在していない現在完了進行形を使わなきゃいけない・・・sorry, English is a pain in the neck, isn`t it?!  (^_ -) Anyway,  here is the translation…

A)  B-chan, you`ve been writing a lot lately.  Do you wanna be a novelist or something?!

B) No, I`ve just been writing a diary.

Okay, that`s enough anout Question ①.  Quesion ② is

➁　How do I say “久しぶりに～した” in English?

Great question!  But once again English and Japanese are very different languages and English is a great language but it`s a pain in the neck so I`m gonna answer ②and Enjoy English with you some more tomorrow!

English and Japanese are really different languages.  For example…

英語で「お疲れ様です」のような言い回しがないです。

And…

「いただきます」　と　「お世話になっております」　もありません。

But here is one common Japanese expression that has an English equivalent:

「めんどくさい」　in English is….

Here are some examples…

Families are a pain in the neck.☆

Getting married is a pain in the neck.

Taking the train is a pain in the neck.

Birthdays are a pain in the neck.

Writing a blog every day is a pain in the neck.     (← _ ←;) えっ……?!

「A pain in the neck」 と 「めんどくさい」 は全く同じ意味だと思います。　あと、ネイティブは “neck” の代わりにもっと強く聞こえる “ass” をよく使います。　意味は変わらないけど “ass” はちょ～っと汚いことばですからもし使ってみたいならGENIE ENJOY ENGLISH で習ったって言わないでね ^_ –

 ☆主語が複数形だったら”is” のかわりに “are” を使います。　主語が動名詞だったら単数形の “is” を使って下さい。

Here are some timely phrases:

saving electricity/money/water

英語の場合はだいたい動詞の “save” を使いますけど。　For example.

A)  Why aren`t the lights on?     (なんで電気付いてないの？)

B)  We`re saving electricity.     (節電してるから。)

or…

A)  Do you wanna go out for a drink tonight?☆

B)  No, sorry, I wanna save my money.

or…

We don`t need to save water in Tokyo.     (東京では節水しなくても大丈夫。)

☆”Go out for a drink” （飲みに行くってこと）is another useful phrase in English.  And it`s Friday night and I`m not the type to always try to save money so… it`s time to go out for a drink!!  I`ll be back to Enjoy English with my lovely Saturday students (and maybe write another blog) tomorrow….

Here is how to talk about decorating in English…

I wanna decorate my room with hibiscus and pictures from Hawaii.
(ハイビスカスとハワイの写真を部屋に飾りたいね)

日本語の場合は「飾るもの・飾りたいもの」が目的語になるけど英語の場合は「場所」が目的語。 Sounds difficult?  Well, maybe…but if you don’t think in Japanese and use this pattern it’s easy…

decorate 「場所」 with 「物」

Here are some more examples:

飾り → plants (植物)
場所 → Oasis Room

Let’s decorate the Oasis Room with lots of plants.

飾り → stuffed animals (ぬいぐるみ)
場所 → 私の部屋

I’m gonna decorate my room with stuffed animals.     (アタシの部屋にぬいぐるみを飾るの)
