“Almost”の使い方はかなり難しいみたいですね。やっぱり中一の時に「ほとんど = almost」を習ったでしょー！ でも、Japanese and English are completely different languages!! 英語と日本語は全然違う言語ですから中一の単語帳を捨てましょう！単語帳の勉強法も！！ And let’s learn how to “Think like a native speaker, speak like a native speaker.” Practice English in phrases, patterns, and conversations. So here are some useful Real English phrases with “almost.”↓↓

① almost + 過去形の動詞　=　何々しそうになった　Here are some examples…

I almost drowned.     （溺れそうになった。）
I almost died.    （死にそうになった。）
I almost missed my stop.    （乗り越しそうになった。）

② almost + 時間 = もうすぐ何時     For example…
In English 「5:58」 is “five-fifty-eight” or “It’s almost six.”

③ almost + 名詞 = 何々に近い     For example…

Bob speaks Japanese, eats Japanese food every day and even likes 納豆!!  He`s almost Japanese!   (「ボブは日本人みたい」か「ボブは日本人に近い」みたいな意味です。)

Well, it`s almost midnight and I`m tired and almost falling asleep  (寝そうになっている！！)…so I`ll write more about “almost” next time!!  Catch you later!

Thanks to 何々・・・

It means 「何々のおかげで」。  Here are a couple examples…

Thanks to you my English is getting better and better.     (あなたのおかげで私はどんどん英語が上手になってる。)

Thanks to everyone GENIE is the most enjoyable English school in Tokyo!     (皆様のおがげでGENIEは東京の一番楽しい英会話スクールです。)

Thanks to all my friendly, charming, and lovely students, my job is always really, really fun!!     (ステキな生徒さん達のおかげで私の仕事は最高に楽しいです！)

Here are some examples…

I’m busy with work. (名詞)
I’m busy working. (動名詞)
I’m busy with a lot of different things. (することが色々あって忙しい。)
I’m busy doing a lot of different things. (色々してて忙しい。)

Talking about the weather in Japanese and English is very different so today let`s practice another weather expression:

It will rain tomorrow.     ←これは Real English です。

「Tomorrow it will be rain」 は Japanese English です。  日本語ではだいたい「雨」の名詞（明日は雨だって）を使うけど、英語の場合は動詞の「rain」を使うので「It will be rain」って言ったら英語のネイティブスピーカーは　「え？何が雨になるか」と思っちゃうかもしれない。「snow」もそうです。「It will be snow」じゃなくて「It will snow」の方が英語的な英語だと思いますよ。　Now, let`s practice some other useful weather expressions using the verb 「rain」…

Do you think it`s gonna rain tomorrow?     (明日雨が降ると思う？)

I don`t think so.     (ううん、降らないと思う。)

But it will probably rain all day today.     (でも今日はずっと雨だろう・・・)

“The” is one of the most difficult words for most students.  But here are two simple (but important!) phrases to help you know when to use “the.”

①　”Do you have time?” って聞いたら (no “the” ですね!)　「時間ありますか？」という意味になります。

②　”Do you have the time?”って聞く時は (“the”あり!) 「何時ですか？」という意味になるんですよ。

Here are some other useful “time” expressions.

a good time     (楽しい時間)

3 times, 4 times, 5 times     (3回、4回、5回)

anytime     (いつでも)

sometime     (いつか)

sometimes     (時々)　　←これも間違えやすいところですね！　英語で時々って言いたい時は必ず “s” をつけなくてはいけないけません！そうしないと「時々」じゃなくて「いつか」という意味になるから。
