Today`s simple and useful phrase is…

be動詞 + in the way

It is a simple phrase but not as easy to use as the Japanese phrase 「邪魔」 so let`s practice!

This table is in the way. (このテーブルは邪魔だね。)

These chairs are in the way. (いつも複数形の主語とbe動詞の “are” も練習した方が良いです！）

Sorry, am I in the way? (あ！すみません、私はじゃまですか？）

It’s Thursday so soon it will be the weekend.  Do you have any plans?  Are you gonna go out? (遊びにいく？) Are you gonna go to the movies? (映画館に行く？) Or are you just gonna stay home?  Here are some expressions you can use when you don’t have any special plans…

I’m gonna hang around my neighborhood. (近所をうろうろする。)

I`m gonna hang out with my friends☆ in Roppongi Hills. (六本木ヒルズで友達とぶらぶらする)

I`m gonna stay home and do nothing. (お家でごろごろする・お家でだらだらする。)　or…I`m gonna stay home and veg out. (“vegetable” の “veg” ですからこの言い回しの本当の意味は野菜になるってことです。 なんか、面白い表現ですよね？＾。＾)

☆英語では複数形があるので単数形の “hang out with my friend” は 複数形の”hang out with my friends”とかなり違うニュアンスがあります。　ということで、３人以上で遊ぶ予定がある場合は”I`m gonna hang out with my friends” って言いましょう。

There`s a cold going around. (風邪が流行ってる。)

You can also say…

There`s a virus going around. (“Virus” の発音はカタカナの「ウィルス」と全然違うからこれをクリックしてチェックした方良いです　→　http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/virus)

“There`s a cold going around,” and “there`s a virus going around” have basically the same meaning.  You can even say, “There`s a bug going around.” “Bug” means insect (虫) but in this case it means “virus.”

Well, that`s all for today.  Remember to wash your hands often and stay away from people who have colds.  And don`t worry about me.  今年はまだ風邪引いてないです。 In English…?  I haven`t caught a cold yet this year.  Why?  Probably because I wash my hands often and stay away from people who have colds.   It`s good advice!

Hi everybody!

My students often say, “salt taste” or “cheese taste.”  I know they are translating 「何々味」 into English but actually…

“Salt taste” and “orange taste” and “corn taste” are Japanese English!  Real English ではありません！

But sometimes 「味」 = “taste” so let`s practice those examples…

This has no taste. ← これは Real English です。　意味は「これは味がない。」  Also…

This doesn`t have much of a taste. （これはあまり味ないねってことです。）

Also “taste” when used as a verb is, I think, the same as 「味見する。」   For example, “Please taste this,” is 「これ、味見してください.」

But 「何々味」は “taste” ではなく、何々-flavored って言うんですよ。 For example…

Do you like cheese-flavored umai-bo? Check out the cute picture　→_→

or…

When I go to the movies I always buy butter-flavored popcorn. (映画館に行くときいつもバター味のポップコーンを買います。）

And…

「何味が好き？」って聞きたい時はこの言い回しを使います・・・

What`s your favorite flavor?

So what`s your favorite flavor for ice cream?  Mine is mint chocolate chip!  And what`s your favorite flavor for うまい棒?  Mine is cheese!!  Thank you, セキ〇様！

Today different students in two different classes asked me, “How do you say 「年末」 in English?”   So today`s useful phrase is…

the end of the year☆

And 「年始」 is…

the beginning of the year☆

☆だいたい”at” が付くので “at” も練習しましょう。  Here are some example sentences:

I am always busy at the end of the year.

There are lots of parties at the end of the year and the beginning of the new year. (年末年始パティーが多い。)

Do you have plans for the end of the year? (年末何か予定ありますか？)
