思いついた!

10月 15th, 2011

Hi everybody!

It`s 5 p.m. on Saturday.  The weekend is here!!  Woo ho \(^。^)/

Well, here is another useful phrase.  Today in my fun and free ☆GAMES☆ class one of my best students asked me, “How do you say 「思いついた」 in English?”  It`s easy!  Just say…

I thought of something! (“Of” が必要ですよ。 抜かないようにね^_ -)

and 「今思いついた!」 is…

I just thought of something!

否定文にしたら・・・

I can`t think of anything.

疑問文にしたら・・・

Can you think of anything?

Well, that`s all for today!  It`s  Saturday so I`m gonna go out and enjoy a Guiness. Check out the picture (→_→)

If you go out tonight I hope you enjoy your night out, too.  And I also hope to Enjoy English with you here at ☆GENIE☆ someday  soon!!

But, sorry, we don`t sell Guiness…m(_ _)m

Catch you later!

Bob

共通点が多い

Hi everybody(^^)/

Here is a useful expression I like to use:

We have a lot in common. (共通点が多い。)

主語はだいたい “We” ですけど “I have a lot in common with [人]” も使います。 For example…

I have a lot in common with Hanako.

Well, that`s all for today!  If hope today`s expression will be useful for you.  And I hope you all think that learning is the greatest joy. If so, then we probably have a lot in common!

Hi everybody(^-^)/    How was your three-day weekend?

Well, let’s start this week with a simple, useful phrase: そっくり Here is how to say it in English…

A look(s) just like B!

Here are some examples:

You look just like Elvis!

Your daughter looks just like you!
(三単現だったら動詞の look に s を付けましょう。)

主語が “We” or “They” だったらだいたいこの言い回しを使います…

主語 + look exactly alike

For example…

The twins look exactly alike.

My sister and I look exactly alike.

Well, that`s all for today!  Catch you later!

Japanese English vs. Real English…again…

Posted: under phrase.

知ってる?

Hi everybody(^_^)/

Here`s another blog about Japanese English vs. Real English.  Japanese has many convenient 使いやすい表現。 For example…

知ってる?

But how do you say 「知ってる?」 in English?  In fact…

「知ってる?」 = “Do you know?”ではありません。 ただの “Do you know?” はジャパニーズイングリッシュです。でも、今日の簡単な言い回し↓↓をマスター出来たら簡単にもっと普通に話せるようになれます。There are a few ways to say 「知ってる?」 in English.  And if you know how to say 「知ってる?」 in English your English will sound much more like “Real English” so…let`s practice!!

① 有名人じゃない場合 → Do you know [人の名前]? = 知り合いですか?     この質問は「知ってる?」に一番近いけど英語の場合は目的語も必要がある。最後に人の名前か目的語の “him,” “her,” or “them” を言います。 For example…

I`ve got a date with Sandy Nelson tomorrow.  Do you know her? ← This is Real English.

② 有名人の場合は ”Do you know…?” は使いません。 ネイティブスピーカーに “Do you know Elvis Presley?” って聞いてもいいけど彼は神様ほど有名だし、もう生きていないから会ったことがあるわけないから冗談に聞こえます。意味は「知り合いですか?」ですからね。 ということで、英語で 「(有名人)知ってる?」って 聞きたい場合は、この言い回しを使いましょう・・・

Have you ever heard of Elvis Presley? ← This is Real English.

And, of course, the answer should be, “Of course!  Everyone has heard of Elvis Presley!!  He is the King of Rock `n` Roll and an American deity!!”     (もちろんだよ! かれはロックンロールの王様とアメリカの神様だよ!)

他の場合も “Have you ever + 過去分詞…?” を使います。 Here are more examples…

③ 場所の場合は絶対 “Do you know…?” を使いません。 でもネイティブの聞き方は難しくないですよ。 また役に立つ現在完了形を使いましょう。 For example, 群馬県知ってる?って聞きたかったら just say…

Have you ever been to  Gunma?

で、珍しい場所を知ってる?って聞きたかったら “been to” の替わりに “heard of” を使ったほうが普通です。 For example…

Have you ever heard of Basque? It`s a country that`s in the north of Spain.  But it`s not Spain.  I met two people from Basque when I joined Genie`s Tour Tokyo in August.  They were really nice! Check out the picture →

④ You can also use the present perfect (現在完了形) for food and drinks.  For example…

Have you ever had 豚汁? (豚汁飲んだことある?)

And for unusual foods and drinks use “heard of” instead of “had.”  珍しい場所みたいに珍しい食べ物・飲み物知ってる??って聞きたいときも “heard of” を使ったほうが普通です。 For example…

Have you ever heard of sesos? (Mexican cow-brain tacos)

Okay, that`s all for today!  I`m very tired so I`m gonna go home and sleep on my futon.  布団って知ってる? 日本の伝統的(?)なベッドですよ。 あ! 物の場合は・・・???何て言えばいいんだろう・・・??? Of course I should say…???

Have you ever heard of a futon?

I`m gonna enjoy my futon tonight and I hope to Enjoy English with you someday soon at Genie.  Catch you later!

もういい!(`ヘ´)

10月 1st, 2011

Hi everybody!  The week is done and I had a great week!!  How about you?

I had a great week so I am in a good mood.  But you can use today`s useful phrase when you are in a bad mood and want to quit something or break up with someone.        (今週はとても良かったから今日はいい気分です。 だけど、本日のフレーズは悪い気分の時に使えます。例えば何かを諦めるときとか、誰かと別れたい時とかに使えます。)

So today`s simple and useful phrase is…

That`s enough!

Or you can also say…

I`ve had enough.

Sometimes “that`s enough” has a positive meaning, too.  For example, if someone is pouring you beer and you don`t want a full glass you can say…

That`s enough, thanks.   Check out the picture!  (→_→)

Ummm…okay, that`s enough for today!  So enjoy the weekend and I hope to ENJOY ENGLISH with you here at ☆GENIE☆ someday soon!!  Catch you later…..
