Hi everybody!

The holiday season is here! And love is in the air♥❤♥❤♥❤ So I hope you don`t have to use these expressions…but they may be useful someday!

Well,  「別れる」 in English is…

break up.

Here are some example expressions:

My girlfriend and I broke up. ← 「彼女と別れた」 って意味で２人で話し合い別れたというニュアンスが入っています。

I broke up with my girlfriend. これも 「彼女と別れた」 という意味なんですけどこっちのほうが自分で別れることにしたというニュアンスが入ってます。

I got dumped. ←これはちょっときつい言い方ですから、日本語の「フラれた」 と同じニュアンスがすると思います。

Students often say, “I have a promise.”  和・英辞書にそう書いてあるでしょう・・・。 後、中一の時に 「約束 = promise」 を習ったかな？　Anyway…”I have a promise” is Japanese English.  「約束」 sometimes means “promise” and sometimes it doesn`t.  と言うことで、「約束」 & “promise” の使い方を見てみましょう・・・

Jimi:  Can you meet me tomorrow night?

Hanako:  Sorry, I have a promise. (←これはジャパニーズイングリッシュです。　先約かもう誰かに会う約束がある場合は英語で “promise” とは言いません。　それに、ジャパニーズイングリッシュに慣れていないネイティブは混乱します。　意味は通じないんですよ。)

じゃあ、なんて言えばいいの？

Just say, “Sorry, I  have plans.” (予定があると言う意味なんです。)

So please remember…予定という意味の 「約束」は “promise” ではありません。

だけど！　時々「約束」と英語の”promise”は一緒です。　For example…

Jimi:  I`m going to Las Vegas next week for 10 days.  (来週１０日間ラスベガスに行くよ。)

Hanako:  Really?!  That sounds great!  But don`t fool around with any strange girls, okay? (本当？！ いいね！　でも、他の女の子と遊ばないでね！)

Jimi:  Of course not!  I just wanna drink and gamble.  I`m not gonna cheat on you. (もちろんだよ！　ただ、飲んだりゲームをしたりしたいんだよ！　浮気しないよ。）

Hanako:  Really?!

Jimi:  Yeah, really!

Hanako:  Do you promise? (約束する? という意味でこれがネイティブの英語です。)

Jimi:  Yes, I promise. (うん、約束する。)

I like eating…and I like drinking!  How about you?  If you answer, “me too” then you should practice today`s useful phrases.

「一口」  for food is…

one bite.

And 「一口」 for drinks is…

one swallow.

Here are some useful phrases:

Can I have a bite? (一口食べていい？)

Can I have a swallow? (一口飲んでいい？)

Would you like a bite? (一口食べる？)

Would you like a swallow? (一口飲む？)

Hi everybody!

There was a big earthquake early this morning and it rained hard until the afternoon today so many students canceled their reservations…(;_;)  Also, two students came late to their lesson and asked me the same question:  “How do you say 寝坊した in English?”  When two different students ask me the same question in the same day I have to make a note of it!  So today`s useful phrase is…

I overslept.

“Sleep” is an irregular verb  (例外の動詞) and the past form of “sleep” is “slept” so the past form of “oversleep” is “overslept.”  It`s a little difficult to pronounce so you should practice saying:

sleep → slept → slept (“slept” の母音の発音は “egg”の母音の発音 と同じです。)

Here are some other useful related phrases:

Don`t oversleep! (寝坊しないで！)

I`m sorry I`m late.  I overslept. (遅れてごめんね。　寝坊した。)

Vanessa never oversleeps. (バネッサは寝坊しないね。)
