There`s a cold going around. (←風邪が流行ってる。)

Many of my students were sick last week so I think there`s something going around. Please be careful not to catch a cold! (←風邪かインフルエンザか何のウィルスが流行っているか分からない時は “a cold” の代わりに “something” を使います。)

Hi everybody!

Last Sunday I was chatting with a new friend and new student at Starbucks and I asked her if she would like to join a 交流イベント。 She said, “Sorry, I already have a promise on that day.”  This is a very common mistake!!  If you look up 「約束」 in a 和英辞書 it will say “promise” but actually “have a promise” is Japanese English.   約束するというのは “promise” or “make a promise” だけど 「約束がある」 と言うのは “have a promise” ではありません。　So how do you say 「ごめんね、もう約束がある」 in English?  It`s easy!  Just say…

Sorry, I already have plans. ←”promise” でもないし単数形の “plan” でもないし、一つだけの予定があってもネイティブは複数形の “plans” を使います。 You can also say, “I have plans.”  別に “already” って言わなくても大丈夫です。

Also, “make a promise” and “promise” are Real English, too.  And they have the same meaning as the Japanese 「約束する」 but they never mean 「予定」.   “Make a promise” と “promise” もネイティブの英語だけど｢予定」という意味の約束にならないんですよ。　Here is an example conversation:

Aちゃん:  Are you gonna call me tomorrow? (明日電話してくれる？)

B君: Sure! (うん！)

A:  Do you promise? （←約束する？）

B:  Yeah, I promise!  Of course I`m gonna call you!  I like you, Aちゃん! （←もちろん！　だって・・・Aちゃんのことが好きだよ！っていう意味です。　B君いい男だろ！？＾_ー）

上の会話の “promise” は日本語の「約束する」と同じ意味だけど日本語の「約束」 は「予定」 と言う意味もありますよね？　英語の “promise” はその意味がないから英語で「約束がある」 か ｢先約がある」 って言いたい時は簡単な “I have plans” or “I already have plans” を使いましょう。

Hi everybody!  How was your weekend?  Mine was good but it`s still too cold!!  I`m really looking forward to spring this year.  So today`s key phrase is…

I`m looking forward to spring.

When you want to say 「何々を楽しみにしている」 in English just use this pattern:

I`m looking forward to + 名詞 or I`m looking forward to + 動名詞

Here are some examples:

I`m looking forward to tomorrow.

I`m looking forward to dinner.

I`m looking forward to the weekend.

I`m looking forward to seeing you tomorrow.

I`m looking forward to having dinner with you.

I`m looking forward to going hiking this weekend.

All of these expressions ↑↑ are Real English.  Native speakers use “I`m looking forward to 何々” all the time!  よ～く使いますよ！　So please try to use it.  And!  このパターン　→ 　「I`m looking forward to + 動詞」　を使わないようにしましょう！　なぜなのか分からないけど生徒さんが会話 & メールでよく 「I`m looking forward to + 動詞」 のパターンを使います。　だけど・・・ 「I`m looking forward to + 動詞」のパターンは Real English ではありません。　中一の時に 「to の次に必ず動詞が入る」 と習ったからかな？？　Well, that is wrong.  “I`m looking forward to see you” とか “I`m looking forward to eat dinner” のような言い回しはジャパニーズイングリッシュです。 So…もっとスムーズにネイティブっぽくネイティブとコミュニケーションを取りたいなら上の例文を PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE しましょう！

Hi everybody!

Here are two useful expressions you can use to describe someone`s appearance:

①「似てる」 in English is…

A look(s) like B…or…A and B look alike

Here are some examples…

You look like Manami.

Tom looks like Jimi. ←三単現ですから動詞の “look” に “s” を付けます。

Tom and Jimi look alike.

②「そっくり」 in English is…

A look(s) just like B…or…A look(s) exactly like B…or…A and B look exactly alike

Here are some examples…

Julia looks exactly like Tina!

You look just like your father!

That baby looks just like you!

Julia and Tina look exactly alike! ←”A and B look just alike” とは言いません。複数形の主語の場合は “just” じゃなくて、いつも “exactly” を使います。

And here`s one more!  For practice, look at this picture and tell me who you think I look like.  この人は誰に似てると思いますか？？？(→_→)

Hi everybody!

Last Saturday a few students asked me about the expression ♥♥♥Love is in the air♥♥♥ Actually, “何々 ＋ be動詞 ＋ in the air” is not the most useful phrase but it is a fun expression so let’s practice it a little more. (実は“何々 ＋ be動詞 ＋ in the air” はそんなに役に立つ表現じゃないかもしれないけど、時期的な言い回しで使うのが楽しいみたいだからもうちょっと連絡しましょう。)

バレンタインの前:

Love is in the air. (「どこでもみんながバレンタインのこととか愛のことを考えている」とか「空気の中でハートマークが飛んでいるという意味なんですね。」)☆

クリスマスの前:

Christmas is in the air. (「どこでもみんながクリスマスのことを考えてる」とか「道がクリスマスの飾りや季節的なソングで雰囲気がクリスマスって感じ！」)

春の前:

Spring is the air. (←この言い回しは今日大リーグのウェブサイトで読みました！ もうすぐ春キャンプだよ！と言う意味なんですね。)

夏の前:

Summer is in the air. (←6月の頭になったらこの言い回しも時々言います。)

後、“Fall is in the air” とか “Winter is in the air”って言っても変ではないけど “何々 is in the air” はちょっと楽しいニュアンスがあるから fall と winter の場合は“is in the air”の代わりに普通の “is coming” を使いましょう。
