行ったことない

Posted: under phrase.
5月 17th, 2012

Hi everybody.  This phrase is difficult for many students:

I`ve never been there.

英語で行ったことないって言おうとする時は”go” の過去分詞の “gone” も使っても大丈夫ですけど、ネイティブスピーカーはだいたいbe動詞の過去分詞の “been” を使います。

☆場所☆に行ったことないって言いたい時は “there” の代わりに 「to + 場所」 を使いましょう。 For example…

I`ve never been to Guam.

I`ve never been to Disneyland.

I`ve never been to Jamaica.

質問にすると・・・

Have you ever been to New York?

短い答えは・・・

Yes, I have./No, I haven`t.

Well, that`s all for today.  I hope you enjoy your next trip to New York or Guam or Disneyland or wherever you want to go. ..and I hope when you go there you can Enjoy English! Catch you later (^。^)/

Hi everybody!

Here is a useful expression you can use as a compliment or as a kind of greeting:

You look great in [色]。 ([色]がすごく似合うよ!)

Let`s practice…

You look great in black.

You look great in orange.

You look good in white.

[色]の変わりに[アクセサリー]にしましょう。 For example…

You look great in hats.

You look great in pearls. (パール[ネックレスなど]がとても似合います。)

Well, that`s all for today.   I hope you look great in every color you wear this week and I hope you enjoy practicing English.  Remember that if you want to improve you have to practice/practice/PRACTICE!!! 上達するのが何よりですよ!

ぴったり!

Posted: under phrase.
5月 11th, 2012

Hi everybody!  I`m back!! I had a fun trip to L.A. and Las Vegas but it`s good to be back in Japan.

Today a student asked me, “How do you say 「ぴったり」 in English?”  Good question!  And it`s easy.  Just say…

Perfect!

And today the weather was great, wasn`t it?  夜のお散歩にぴったりな季節ですよね? In English, that`s…

It`s the perfect season to go for a walk at night.

So for 「何々をするのにぴったりな時期/季節」 just use this simple pattern:

It`s the perfect season to + 動詞/It`s the perfect season for + 名詞句

Here are some more examples…

It`s the perfect season to drink beer outside.

It`s the perfect season for a picnic.

It`s the perfect season to watch a baseball game.

It`s the perfect season for love(^。ー)

Well,  that`s all for today.  Have a great weekend!

Here are some more examples:

I won`t be able to call you for a while.   (しばらく電話できない。)

I won`t be able to eat good sushi for a while. (しばらく美味しいお寿司食べれない。)

So, sorry, I won`t be able to upload a new blog for awhile but please check out some of the older blogs!

too/either/neither

Posted: under phrase.
4月 24th, 2012

Hi everybody!

Last Friday I was drinking with some new Japanese and non-Japanese friends in Ebisu and one girl asked another girl…

私も嫌いってなんて言うの? I hate it neither?

Actually, no.  “I hate it neither” はかなり変な文章です。 This is a little difficult because there are three ways to say 「も」 in English: ①too; ②either; and ③neither.  「も」は英語で三つの言い方があるんですね。 肯定文の場合は “too” って言います。否定文の場合は “either” か “neither” を使います。使い分け方はちょっと難しいかもしれないけど、シンプルな例文を見て一つずつ練習しましょう。

① too ←This one is easy.  肯定文の場合は “too” を使いましょう。 For example…

A)  I like sushi.

B)  Me, too. (私もってことで、短く答える時に”I” の代わりに “Me” を使います。)

or…

A) I used to live in Las Vegas. (前はラスベガスに住んでいた。)

B) Really?!  I used to live there, too! (本当?! 僕もそうだよ!)

② either ←否定文の場合は “either” を使います。 For example…

A) I don`t have much money. (お金あまり持ってない。)

B) I don`t have much either. (私もあまりない。)

③ neither ←これも否定文の「も」です。 短く答える時に使いましょう。 For example…

A) I don`t have any pets. (ペット飼ってない。)

B) Me, neither. (私も。)

基本的な使い方はこれだけですけど動詞が “hate” だったら混乱しやすくなるので、もう少し練習しましょう・・・

A) I hate crowded places. (混んでいるところが嫌い!)

B) えっとぅ・・・こういう場合は「私も」ってなんて言えばいいんだろう・・・???  Me neither??  Me, too??

どっちが正しいのでしょうか?! Actually, “me, too” is correct. なぜならば意味的には “hate” はネガティブだけど文法的には “I hate 何々” って肯定文ですからね。 So, let`s practice a little more…

A) I hate mayonnaise.

B) Me, too! (←これは正しい Real English です。)

A) I hate waking up early.

A) Me, too! (←This, too!)

Well, that`s all for today.  I`m a little tired and I wanna go home and go to sleep.  But I had a great day and I hope you had a great day, too!  Catch you later (^。^)/
